Ellen Riebkes, 96, formerly a resident of the Friendship Manor, Wellsburg, died from natural causes on Oct. 25, 2000, at the Ackley Presbyterian Village in Ackley.
Funeral services were at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 28, at St. Peter's United Church of Christ, rural Wellsburg. Pastor Ron Fisher officiated. Burial followed at the church cemetery.
Pallbearers were Rick Vogel, Nathan Vogel, Karl Harken, Derek Harken, Kendall Ringena and Travis Ringena.
She was born Oct. 27, 1903, in rural Wellsburg, daughter of Dick and Martha (Lindaman) Riekens. She was raised in rural Wellsburg where she attended country school, later attending sewing college in Grundy Center. She was married to Louis M. Riebkes on Jan. 21, 1925, at the East Friesland Presbyterian Church Parsonage in rural Ackley. She was a farm wife being devoted to raising her family, helping with farm chores, sewing, and enjoyed playing the piano and organ. She was a member of St. Peter's United Church of Christ being involved with the Ladies Aide, Gleeners Group, Prayer Fellowship and had served as a Sunday School Teacher.
She is survived by daughter, Marlys (Mrs. Frederick) Vanderwerf of Wellsburg; granddaughters, Pauline (Mrs. Richard) Vogel of Wellsburg, Sandra (Mrs. Karl) Harken of Aplington and Debbie (Mrs. Kendall) Ringena of Wellsburg; and great-grandchildren, Nathan Vogel, Derek Harken and Travis and Allison Ringena.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Louie in February 1991; her parents; infant grandson, Ivan Dale Vanderwerf; and brothers, Hank, Raymond and Lester Riekens.
Creps-Abels Funeral Home, Eldora, was in charge of the arrangements.
