Allen Spieker Services Held

Allen W. Spieker, of Wellsburg, died Friday, February 25, while performing his custodial duties at the Friendship Manor in Wellsburg, having attained the age of 74 years, 8 months and 4 days.

Funeral services were held Monday, February 28, at St. Peter's United Church of Christ in rural Wellsburg at 1:30 p.m. with Pastor Ronald Fisher officiating.

Pallbearers were Kent Beving, Dan Yordy, Frank Meyeraan, Harlyn Riekena, Delbert Ross and Carl J. King.

Burial followed in the church cemetery. Military graveside rites were conducted by the Wellsburg AMVET Post #19.

A memorial fund has been established.

Allen Willis Spieker was born June 21, 1919, in Wellsburg, the son of Jerry and Ella (Lindaman) Spieker. He attended Flowing Well Country School and Wellsburg High School. He then joined his father in the operation of the family farm until he joined the Army in late 1942. He was married to Matilda Finger on July 7, 1943, in Medford, Oregon, while serving in the United States Army. He served in Europe until late 1945. He then returned home to resume operation of the family farm until 1983. Since then he has kept himself occupied with odd jobs, part-time jobs and visiting grandchildren.

Al was a member of the St. Peter's United Church of Christ where he served on the Consistory for six three-year terms. He was a member of the Wellsburg Community Club. He was a lover of children and an avid sports fan.

He was preceded in death by his parents; 1 sister; and 1 grandchild.

Survivors include his wife Matilda; 1 son, Jay Spieker of Wellsburg; 3 daughters, Maxine Heath of Woodridge, IL, Jean Gustafson of Kalona and Ruth Webster of Forest, Ontario, Canada; 10 grandchildren; and 2 sisters, Lydia Spieker of Wellsburg and Faye Benning of Geneva.

The Doyen-Abels Funeral Home, Wellsburg, was in charge of the funeral arrangements.
