Onkie Sherfield Services Today
Onkie Sherfield died Sunday in the hospital at Independence, where he had been a patient for a week. Prior to that time he had been in a hospital in Waterloo. His death followed a long illness.
Born in Forreston, Illinois, April 11, 1883, he first went to Rushmore, Minnesota as a young man, and then in 1912 came to the Ackley community. In 1918 he and Tena Jutting were married at Cleves, and they lived on two farms in this area before purchasing the present home place four miles south and one half miles east of Ackley, just east of the Grundy county line.
In the spring of 1946, Mr. and Mrs. Sherfield retired and moved into Ackley. They have made their home at 1020 Park Avenue.
For many years Mr. Sherfield has been a member of the East Friesland Presbyterian Church.
Surviving are his wife; two sons, Thomas C., who lives on the family farm, and Raymond, of Whitten; four grandchildren; one brother Charles, of Rushmore, Minn.; four sisters, Mrs. J. A. Frerichs of Waterloo, Mrs. Jennie Meinders of Freeport, Ill., Mrs. Herb Hendricks of Rushmore, Minn., Mrs. Henry Fenken of Sibley. A daughter, Ruth Tena, died in 1933 at the age of 11 and a brother, Dick, of Rushmore, died in March of this year.
Prayer services will be held at Brandt's Funeral Home at 1 p.m. Thursday, to be followed by funeral services at the East Friesland church at 1:30, with the Rev. C. F. Siemsen conducting. Interment will be in the East Friesland cemetery.
