Velda M. Freed, 94, of Waukee, passed away on Sunday, April 3, 2016 at the Granger Nursing & Rehab Center in Granger. A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, April 6th at 10:30 AM at the Ivester Church of the Brethren in rural Grundy Center. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the church. Burial will follow services at the Sheller Cemetery in Grundy Center. Memorials may be directed to the family.

Velda was born on October 4, 1921 in Hardin, County, Iowa, the daughter of Bert & Celista (Lowe) Sisson. She later married Harvey Freed.

Velda is survived by her daughter Elaine Monaghan of Des Moines, Iowa and son Larry Freed of Bee Cave, TX; daughter-in-law Kay Freed of Austin, TX; grandchildren Eric (Katherine) Roccasecca of Ankeny, IA, Stephanie (John) Whittaker of Austin, TX, Jason Freed of Austin, TX, Emily (Mike) Ling of Mill Valley, CA and Lucas (Chrissy) Freed of West Des Moines, IA; great-grandchildren Zoe Anne Roccasecca, Brock, Presley & Piper Whittaker, Harrison & Vivian Ling and Raymond & Wesley Freed.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Harvey; daughter Janet Freed Backsen and son LaVerne "Butch" Freed; siblings Floyd Sisson, Avis Steinfeldt and Ted Sisson.
