Rites Held For Janelle Smothers

Janelle Kay Smothers, 40, of Waterloo, died Thursday, September 3 at Allen Memorial Hospital in Waterloo of natural causes.

Funeral services were held Monday, September 7 at 1:30 p.m. at the Engelkes-Abels Funeral Home in Grundy Center with Pastor Bill Hampton officiating. Interment was in the Rose Hill Cemetery in Grundy Center.

Pallbearers were Robert Koch, Lyle Hansen, Rodney Slifer, Paul Wright, Greg Appleby, and Curtis Storjohann.

Janelle grew up in the Waterloo area and attended high school at West High in Waterloo. She graduated with a degree in Interior Decorating from Hawkeye Tech.

Janelle was currently working at Design Product.

Janelle was preceded in death by an infant brother.

Janelle is survived by her daughter Dawn and husband Brian Kalkbrenner of Waterloo; a son Alan Smothers of Marion; a grandson Jared Kalkbrenner of Waterloo; her parents Richard and Shirley Carpenter of Grundy Center; a brother David and wife Kathy Carpenter of Waterloo; a sister Connie and husband Donnie Wellner of Waterloo; and other nieces and nephews.

The Engelkes-Abels Funeral Home of Grundy Center was in charge of the arrangements.
