Edward John Hellmich, 95, of Conrad, died Thursday, November 13 at St. Luke’s Hospital Hospice Unit in Cedar Rapids, IA. A celebration of life will be held in Conrad in the spring when all family members can participate. Memorials may be shared with St. Luke’s Hospice of Cedar Rapids or the church or organization of your choice.
John was born September 7, 1919, to Marie and Wenzel Hellmich of Beaman, IA. He graduated from Conrad High School, served in the U.S. Army during WWII, and was a long-time member of the American Legion. John had a love of working and caring for the farm land near Whitten, Iowa for over 40 years.
John was an avid fisherman. He enjoyed traveling throughout the entire US and much of the world. Throughout his life he enjoyed playing cards, dominoes, and Rummikub, and watching sports.
The greatest joy and pride for John were his four children: Kaye Ann, Arlington, VA; Donna (John) Winter, Cedar Rapids; Mary Hellmich, Chicago; Rick (Dee) Hellmich, Algona; and his grandchildren: Dr. Christine (Justin) Winter-Rundell, Cedar Rapids; Matt Winter, Marion; Dr. Jessica (Dr. John Sarwark)- Starck, Chicago; Stephanie (Mark) Skeba, Minneapolis; Will Starck, Washington, D.C.; Brian (Amy) Hellmich, currently stationed in Germany with the U.S. Air Force; Erica Hellmich, Ames. John has seven great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Helen Hemphill, and is survived by his sister, Ann Shirk of Papillion, NB.
John’s family would like to convey our appreciation to the staff at Oak Estates Assisted Living in Conrad for the loving, family-type care they shared during his last 13 years of life.
We also thank the medical staff at St. Luke’s Hospice for their kind, thoughtful care for Dad and the family .
