Rites Held For Thomas Copley

Thomas "Virgil" Copley of Marshalltown, formerly of Grundy Center, was born November 1, 1903 in Grundy County, the son of Thomas W. and Mary Miller Copley. He passed away on October 18 at the Iowa Methodist Hospital in Des Moines, having attained the age of 87 years, 11 months, and 17 days.

Virgil attended Reinbeck schools, graduating from Reinbeck High School in 1924. He then attended Monmouth College in Monmouth, Illinois. On January 25, 1929 Virgil was united in marriage to Helen Collins in Waterloo. They made their home in Reinbeck where Virgil was employed by Ford Motor Company until 1935 when they moved to Grundy Center where Virgil worked for the Ford Motor Company there. After a time, Virgil became a self-employed accountant and also was a accountant for Iowa Light and Power in Grundy Center. Virgil and Helen moved to Marshalltown in 1966 where they owned and operated the Bundy Apartment Hotel.

Virgil was an avid reader and enjoyed spending time with his children and grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and one sister, Ruth Wilson.

Survivors include his wife Helen; two sons, Richard E. Copley and wife Jean of Vancouver, Canada, and Thomas W. and wife Grace of Des Moines; and one daughter, Patricia Seggerman, of Marshalltown; 6 grandchildren; 1 brother, John Copley of Reinbeck; and three sisters, Wava Terrill of Texas, Lois Gardner of Cincinnati, Ohio, and Nina Mead of Aurora, Colorado.

Memorial services were held on October 23 at the Engelkes-Abels Funeral Home in Grundy Center at 10:30 a.m. The body was cremated and burial will take place at a later date.
