L. Schroeder Services Held

LaVerne William Schroeder passed away August 31 at his home in Grundy Center, having attained the age of 66 years, 10 months, 15 days.

Funeral services were held on September 3 at 2 p.m. at the American Lutheran Church in Grundy Center with Pastor Paul C. Nelson officiating. Interment was in the Rose Hill Cemetery, Grundy Center.

Marvin Petersen, soloist, sang "Just a Closer Walk With Thee". The congregation sang "Amazing Grace" and "How Great Thou Art". Connie Huffman was the organist.

Casket bearers were John Krull, George K. Weseman, Harry Barnes, Mark DeLange, Eldon Harms, and L.L. McIntyre.

Ushers were Art Flater and Vernon Reinicke.

LaVerne William Schroeder was born October 16, 1924 in Fayette County, the son of William and Millie (Schortau) Schroeder. He grew up and was educated in Fayette County, graduating from Oran High School in 1941. Following graduation, LaVerne was employed as a farm manager for several years, and then was a buyer for Rath Company in Waterloo for 31 years. From 1978 to 1988 LaVerne owned and operated Joe's Lounge in Grundy Center.

He was married to Virginia Stedman in 1943. He was later married to Claire Moberg on December 5, 1954, in Waterloo. LaVerne was a member of the American Lutheran Church in Grundy Center. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, golfing and playing cards.

Preceding him in death were his parents; and two brothers, Rinehart and Clarence.

Survivors include his wife Claire, four sons, Allen and wife Carol of Waverly, Gary and wife Sue of Grundy Center, Terry and wife Bonnie of Grundy Center, and Rick and wife Vikki of Grundy Center, two daughters, Pam and husband Gary Lorenz of Reinbeck, and Renee and husband Dennis Shaffer of Reinbeck; 13 grandchildren; two sisters, Esther Eich of Sumner, and Luella Buhr of Oelwein; and one brother Harold of Readlyn.

The Engelkes-Abels Funeral Home, Grundy Center, was in charge of arrangements.
