Susie Henze Services Held
Susie Henze of Grundy Center passed away on August 6 at Grundy County Memorial Hospital having attained the age of 87.
Funeral services were held August 9 at the American Lutheran Church in Grundy Center at 1:30 p.m. with Pastor Gary J. Olson officiating.
Pallbearers were Randal Kalkwarf, Doug Kalkwarf, Jim Kalkwarf, Gary Kalkwarf, Norman Aswegan, and Galen Aswegan. Honorary pallbearer was Keith Kalkwarf.
Susie was born the daughter of Ernest and Trienja Hector Swygman in Beerta, The Netherlands on November 30, 1903. She attended one year of school in the Netherlands, then came to the United States with her parents in May of 1910. She attended school at Allison for five years and one year in Parkersburg.
She worked three years for Ben and Ella Jungling and one year for George and Fannie Hempen doing housework.
Susie was married to Martin Henze December 30, 1925 at Salem Lutheran Church in rural Grundy Center. They farmed in Colfax Township, Grundy Co., until 1953 when they retired and made their home at 504 4th Street, Grundy Center. Martin passed away on January 21, 1965.
Susie was a member of Salem Lutheran Church until its closing when she became a member of American Lutheran Church in Grundy Center.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Martin; one brother, Dick Swygman; two sisters, Fannie Nieman and Sena Engelkes; and one infant sister.
Survivors include three daughters, Lydia Henze of Grundy Center, Mrs. Harold (Tena) Aswegan of rural Parkersburg, and Mrs. Reinhard (Emma) Kalkwarf of rural Holland; one sister, Alice Oltman of Grundy Center; 7 grandchildren; and 5 great-grandchildren.
Engelkes-Abels Funeral home of Grundy Center was in charge of the arrangements.
