Ubbie Petersen Succumbs To CA Car Crash
Ubbie C. Petersen, lifelong resident of Lincoln township and Grundy Center, died Thursday evening, May 23, in a Ventura, CA hospital. Death was due to a head-on automobile crash two weeks earlier in that city.
The second vehicle involved in the accident was occupied by two young men. Witnesses reported their car collided with another then bounced off into the lane the Petersen Buick was traveling.
Petersen sustained severe multiple injuries to his head and chest. He failed to regain consciousness during his hospitalization.
Ubbie and Helen Petersen spent the winter months in California in recent years. Their two daughters, Mrs. Margaret Ann Griffith and Mrs. Joan Stonelake, reside in the Los Angeles area.
Memorial services were held at 3 o'clock Wednesday afternoon at Bethany Presbyterian Church, Grundy Center.
Rev. Calvin Vanderwerf conducted the service. Mrs. Marcia Heronimus was organist and Mrs. Dorthy Halstead was vocal soloist.
Ubbie C. Petersen, 86, son of Henry P. and Annie Dieken Petersen, was born in Lincoln township, Grundy county, Iowa, February 19, 1905. He attended Grundy Center high school.
Ubbie Petersen and Helen Cramer were married October 6, 1925. Following several years farming in Lincoln township, they moved to Grundy Center where Ubbie was engaged in the implement business for 16 years, then served as territory representative for the Caswell Corporation of Cherokee until he retired in 1970.
Five children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Petersen; one son, Douglas R.; two daughters, Margaret Ann and Joan Carol; and twin boys who died shortly following birth.
Mr. Petersen was a member of the Bethany Presbyterian Church for many years, and also of the Grundy Center Masonic Lodge.
Survivors include his wife; one son, Douglas Petersen of Lincoln, NE; two daughters, Margaret Ann (Mrs. Donald Griffith, Northridge, CA) and Joan Carl (Mrs. Harry Stonelake, Ventura, CA); eight grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; two sisters, Mrs. Emma Stachour and Mrs. Henrietta Mutch, both of Grundy Center.
The body was cremated. Family committal services will take place at a later date at Rose Hill Cemetery, Grundy Center.
A memorial fund has been established.
