Gertie Rieken Services Held
Gertie Rieken, 84, passed away on Saturday, April 13, at the Presbyterian Home in Ackley, of cancer.
Funeral services were held Monday, April 15, at 1:30 p.m., at St. Peter's United Church of Christ in rural Wellsburg, with Rev. Ronald Fisher officiating.
Casket bearers were Robert Beck, Ronald Rieken, Doug Lindaman, Gerald Meyer, Kerwin Strasser, and Kenneth VanHauen.
Interment was in St. Peter's United Church of Christ Cemetery, in rural Wellsburg.
Gertie, the daughter of Eike and Trientje Luppen Ruter, was born on August 19, 1906, in Wellsburg. She grew up in the Wellsburg area, attending rural schools through grade school, then graduating from Wellsburg High School. Gertie went on to attend the State Teachers College (UNI), in Cedar Falls.
On February 20, 1941, she was united in marriage to Henry Rieken, at the Wellsburg Reformed Church. Gertie taught school in the rural area for many years.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Henry; four brothers, Herman, Fred, Peter, and Eike; three sisters, Lena Heinrich, Grace Meyer, and Hilda Lindaman.
Survivors include one brother, John Ruter of Wellsburg; four sisters, Jessie Finke, Emma deNeui, Alice Ruter, all of Wellsburg, and Edith Beck of Des Moines.
A memorial fund has been established.
The Doyen-Abels Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
