Former Resident Dies In One-Car Accident
A former Grundy Center man was killed in a one-car accident Sunday, December 23.
Scott Allen Jans, 31, of 1313 19th Street, Eldora, died when his car fell 65 feet from a bridge east of Eldora on Highway 175, and plummeted into the frozen Iowa River.
Jans was westbound on 175 when his 1984 Chevrolet climbed the south guard rail of the bridge and slid for 100 feet before it fell to the south and somersaulted down the embankment. Jans was thrown from the vehikle and suffered massive head injuries.
Jans reportedly was last seen in Grundy Center at 2 a.m. Sunday. He was reported missing at 8 a.m. Sunday. A passerby spotted the partially submerged wreckage of the car in the Iowa River at 1:45 p.m. Monday afternoon.
Authorities closed Highway 175 for a time Monday afternoon to allow a crane to pull the battered car from the frozen river. Jans' body was recovered a few feet from his car.
The accident was investigated by the Eldora Police Department, the Iowa State Patrol, and the Southern Hardin Emergency Squad. Authorities have not determined what caused Jans to lose control of his car.
Jans is the son of Merle Jans of Reinbeck and Wilma Ash of Marshalltown. He is survived by his wife Kayt, and three children, ages 5 years, 20 months, and three weeks.
