Jake Engelkes Services Held

Jake Engelkes, 83, of Wellsburg, passed away on Friday, December 8, at the Eldora Regional Medical Center of an apparent heart attack.

Funeral services were held at the Pleasant Valley Reformed Church, Holland, on Monday, December 11, at 10:30 a.m. with Rev. Joel Brummel officiating.

Loretta Arends, Rosie Luhring and Marcia VanHauen sang "Take The Name of Jesus With You" and "The Old Rugged Cross." Mrs. Alvina Walterman was the organist and also played selected numbers for the prelude and postlude.

Casket bearers were Neil Okones Jr., Lee Okones, Bernard Murra, Bernie Engelkes, Roger Engelkes and Harold Murra.

Jake Schoneman, Johannes Meester, Charles Freese and R. M. VanHauen were ushers. Edna Meester and Jeanett Meester were in charge of the floral arrangements.

Interment was in the Pleasant Valley Reformed Church Cemetery, Holland.

Jake B. Engelkes, son of Berend M. and Schwaantje Meester Engelkes, was born May 4, 1906, on a farm in Grundy county. He grew up on the farm and attended Colfax Township School #2.

On February 18, 1937, Jake was united in marriage to Matilda Okones at the Little Brown Church. After their marriage, they farmed for many years on the family farm north of Holland. Jake retired in 1975 and moved to Wellsburg, where he was currently living.

He was a faithful member of the Pleasant Valley Reformed Church, rural Holland, where he served as deacon and elder.

Jake was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, E.B., Henry B., and Omke B.; and three sisters, Fannie Armstrong, Trena Wickers, and Anna Meyer.

He is survived by his wife, Matilda, of Wellsburg; one son and daughter-in-law Paul and Mary Engelkes, rural Wellsburg; two grandsons, Nathan and Evan; and one sister, Katherine Tammen of Parkersburg.

A memorial fund has been established.

The Doyen-Abels Funeral Home in Wellsburg was in charge of the funeral arrangements.
