Harlen Springer Services Held

Harlen Edward Springer, 74, died at his home in Grundy Center Saturday, November 18, at 3:20 p.m. He had been ill with Lou Gehrig's disease for five years.

Services were held at the United Methodist Church in Grundy Center Tuesday, November 21, at 1:30 p.m. Rev. D. Ward Young officiated.

Mrs. Marcia Heronimus was organist and played selected numbers, "How Great Thou Art," and "Precious Memories." Ushers were Donald Palmer and Marlyn Peters.

Casket bearers were: Paul Rouse, Larry Teasdale, Randy Thoren, Bernard Eilderts, Howard Popes and Mark Wiltfang. Shirley Peters and Irene Strickler took care of the flowers. Car drivers were Paul Rouse, Don Rouse, and Calvin Wiltfang. Burial was in Rose Hill Cemetery, Grundy Center.

Harlen was born August 26, 1915, at Grundy Center, the son of William and Margaret Stumberg Springer. He graduated from the Grundy Center high school in 1933 where he was active in sports. On October 3, 1936, he was united in marriage to Audrey Connerley at Eldora. He was a World War II veteran having served in the South Pacific. For 39 years Harlen worked as a carpenter locally and then for Smith-Gehris, Inc. of Iowa Falls. He retired in 1977. The Springers had spent their winters in Arizona for several years. They observed their golden wedding anniversary September 28, 1986.

He was a member of the United Methodist Church and the American Legion Post #349.

He is survived by his wife, Audrey; one daughter, Mrs. Roger (Pat) Kruse of Homer, NE; one son, William and wife Rebecca of Marion, IA; four grandchildren; and three great-granddaughters. He was preceded in death by his parents.

The Engelkes-Abels Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

A memorial fund has been established.
