Rites Held for John Bottema

John Bottema, Sr., 86, passed away Tuesday, October 16, at the Grundy Care Center in Grundy Center.

Funeral services were held Saturday, October 20, at the Whitten Community Church, with Rev. Charles Fry officiating.

Burial was in the Benson Cemetery near Whitten.

John Bottema, the son of Jacob and Etta Isebrand Bottema, was born in Wellsburg on July 14, 1904. He was raised and educated in Dike.

On November 19, 1924, John was married to Florence Lubbert at Grundy Center. He farmed near Whitten for 60 years and was sexton at the Benson Cemetery for 15 years.

In 1985, John moved to Liscomb, and last year to the Grundy Care Center.

John was preceded in death by his wife; five grandchildren; one sister; and one infant brother.

Surviving are four sons, Jacob and Lawrence of Eldora, Robert of LeGrand, and John Jr. of Union; six daughters, Mildred Neuendorf and Dorothy Davison of Eldora, Etta Moats of Grundy Center, Esther Ankrum of Marshalltown, Delores Buzzell of Boone and Varina Eason of Iowa Falls; 21 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and one sister, Adeline Henze of Holland.

Memorials may be directed to the family.

The Biersborn Funeral Home of Union was in charge of the arrangements.
