Rites Held For George Thurston

George Thurston, 46, of Ankeny and formerly of Cedar Falls, passed away on Saturday, September 29, at his home.

Funeral services were held Thursday, October 4, at the Community Church of Hudson at 2 p.m.

Honorary casket bearers were Tom Wicher and Keith Jones. Casket bearers were Mike Maas, Ray Basset, John Robinson, Steve Conway, Jack Schlicht, Ron Streed, David Quegg and R. B. McCullogh.

Interment was in Elmwood Cemetery, Dike.

George Arthur Thurston, son of Melvin and Lois Konken Thurston, was born September 16, 1944, in West Palm Beach, FL. He grew up and attended school in LeGrand until 1961, when he moved with his family to Hudson. He graduated from Hudson Community High School in 1962. Following graduation, George attended UNI where he earned his liberal arts degree.

He served in the U.S. Navy for four years, with one year in Vietnam.

On January 28, 1971, George was united in marriage to Joann Binzen in Bancroft. Two children were born to this marriage: Samuel and Joseph. George and Joann were later divorced.

Following his graduation from UNI, George was employed as a real estate agent for Paul Braasch Realty Company in Cedar Falls. He then worked for many years as an appraiser and property manager for Jones Appraisal Service in Cedar Falls. Most recently, George was employed by the Veterans Administration in Des Moines, where he was senior review appraiser for the past two and a half months.

He was a member of the Carlton Brethren Church in rural Garwin, and was an accredited senior member of the American Society of Appraisers (ASA).

George is survived by two sons, Samuel and Joseph of Cedar Falls; and by his parents, Melvin and Lois Thurston, also of Cedar Falls.

The Dike Funeral Chapel was in charge of the professional arrangements.
