Gladys Verly Services Held
Gladys Verly, 82, of Grundy Center, passed away Tuesday, June 26, at Allen Memorial Hospital in Waterloo.
Funeral services were held Friday, June 29, at the First Presbyterian Church in Grundy Center at 1:30 p.m. Rev. David Stellmon and Rev. Laura Stellmon, assisted by Rev. Glenn Dieken, officiated the service.
Casket bearers were Les Verly, Jeff Verly, Alvin Dreesman, Brad Stark, Phillip Akin, Joel Frey, Paul Frey and Perry Steinmeyer.
Interment was in Rose Hill Cemetery in Grundy Center.
Gladys Verly, daughter of Leslie Earl and Mary Bicket Stark, was born February 21, 1908, in Grundy county. Gladys grew up and attended school in Grundy county.
In July of 1927, Gladys was united in marriage to Everett E. Verly in Iowa Falls. They farmed in Tama county until 1933.
Gladys then moved to Grundy Center, where she was employed as clerk and bookkeeper for the J.C. Penney store for 30 years.
Gladys was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; one son, Claire Verly; two grandsons, Jeffrey Frey and Courtney Kriz; and two brothers, William Stark and Richard Stark.
She is survived by two daughters, Virginia, Mrs. Sherman Frey, of Aplington, and Joyce, Mrs. Marvin Steinmeyer, Grundy Center; nine grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren; and by three sisters, Evelyn Heltibridle and Grace Akin, both of Waterloo; and Marjorie, Mrs. Elmer Fritzel, of Wellsburg.
A memorial fund has been established.
The Engelkes-Abels Funeral Home in Grundy Center was in charge of the funeral arrangements.
