Rites Held For R. D. McMartin

Robert Dean McMartin, 65, of rural Beaman, passed away on Saturday, May 5.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday, May 9, at 1:30 p.m. at the Beaman United Methodist Church. Rev. Harold Schirm officiated.

Casket bearers were Charles Neff, Leo Kopsa, Malcolm Miller, Larry Groth, David Kuhl and Walter Gethmann.

Honorary casket bearers were Darwin Vint, Allen Medberry, Melvin Stephenson, Richard Lynch, Robert Untiedt and Homer Anderson.

Burial was in Oakland Cemetery in Beaman, with Military Rites conducted by Weatherman-Walter American Legion Post #131, Beaman.

Robert Dean McMartin, son of Donald H. and Dorothy M. Stull McMartin, was born September 12, 1924, in Beaman. He graduated from Beaman High School in 1942, and attended Iowa State University before serving in the U.S. Navy during WWII, from 1943 to 1946.

On December 14, 1952, he was united in marriage to Barbara Wood deSilva in Conrad.

A lifelong resident of Beaman, Mr. McMartin was actively involved in farming. He was a member of the United Methodist Church in Beaman; the Weatherman-Walter American Legion Post #131 of Beaman; and sat on the board of Commissioners of the Grundy County Memorial Hospital. He also served for 21 years on the Beaman Co-op Elevator Board.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Mr. McMartin is survived by his wife Barbara; four sons, Bradd McMartin, Green Mountain, Brian deSilva, Beaman, Bruce deSilva, Iowa Falls, and Brent deSilva, Marshalltown; one daughter, Barbara McMartin, Brehnham, Brenham, TX; 11 grandchildren; and one brother, Hume E. McMartin, of Granite Falls, WA.

The Johnston Funeral Home in Conrad was in charge of the arrangements.
