Rites Held For Bernard Wiarda

Bernard Wiarda, 88, of Grundy Center, passed away Thursday, April 12, at the Presbyterian Home of Ackley.

Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Monday, April 16, at Bethany Presbyterian Church in Grundy Center, with Rev. Calvin Vanderwerf officiating.

Merle Mamminga sang "How Great Thou Art," and "The Old Rugged Cross." He was accompanied by Mrs. Raymond Appel, who also played selected numbers for the prelude and postlude.

Casket bearers were Merlyn Wiarda, Clifford Ackerman, Donald Reiher, Irving Wiarda Jr., Stephen Wiarda and Don Norell.

Ed Flater and Robert Wolthoff were ushers.

Interment was in Rose Hill Cemetery, Grundy Center.

Bernard W. Wiarda, son of Jacob M. and Rena Ackerman Wiarda, was born June 27, 1901, in Butler county. He grew up and was educated near Allison.

On November 23, 1940, Bernard was united in marriage to Viola Jean Pabst in Grundy Center.

He was employed at John Deere in Waterloo until the mid 1940s. He then was a new home contractor in Iowa falls until 1974, when he retired and moved to California. After his wife Viola's death in 1983, Bernard moved back to Iowa.

Bernard was preceded in death of his wife Viola; his parents; two brothers, William and Virgil; and one sister Ellen.

He is survived by three brothers: Irving Wiarda Sr., Dows, Dean Wiarda, Grundy Center, and Darius Wiarda, Boulder, CO; one sister Elizabeth, Mrs. Carl Norrel, State Center; and by several nieces and nephews.

A memorial fund has been established.

The Engelkes-Abels Funeral Home in Grundy Center was in charge of the arrangements.
