Grundy Center Woman Killed In Car Mishap

A Grundy Center woman, enroute home from Waterloo where she operated a business, was killed instantly in a head-on car collision at 6:15 p.m. Tuesday on Highway 57, about 2 1/2 miles southwest of Cedar Falls.

Killed outright was Mrs. Lois Eckblad, 52, of 707 K Avenue, Grundy Center, who was part-owner of Ken's Card & Party Shop on East Fourth St. in Waterloo.

She was driving west on Highway 57, alone in her 1965 Buick.

Injured seriously was the driver of the other car, Robert Eugene Reece, 23, of RFD 2, Grundy Center. Reece was also alone in his 1961 Chevrolet and was driving east on the highway.

Reece is a patient at Sartori hospital, Cedar Falls, suffering from a compound fracture of one hip, skull fracture, and cuts and abrasions.

Deputy County Sheriff Dick Kern told The Register that although the accident occurred in Black Hawk county, he was called to the scene.

The head-on-crash took place on a nearly straight stretch of Highway 57 a short distance inside the Black Hawk county line.

Kern said the Iowa Highway Patrol is investigating the fatal mishap.

Mrs. Eckblad had commuted daily to the shop she and her sister owned in Waterloo since 1962.

Mrs. Eckblad, the former Lois Crawford, was born April 11, 1913, at Knoxville, the daughter of Frank and Edith Crawford. She married Gordon Eckblad on June 6, 1935, at Pratt, Kansas.

The Eckblads operated a flower shop in Marshalltown for seven years, then lived for several years in Colorado. They moved to Grundy Center, in 1959, where he operated the Dust-Tex company until a few months before his death.

Her husband, the late Gordon Eckblad, died January 1, 1963.

Mrs. Eckblad continued to reside at Grundy Center. A daughter, Anna Mae Wise, and a granddaughter, Carrie Wise, made their home with Mrs. Eckblad.

Services are tentatively set for 2 p.m. Friday at the Grundy Center Methodist Church, with burial in the Grundy Center cemetery.

Other survivors include another daughter, Charmaine Moore, of Denver, Colorado; a grandson, Jeffrey Moore; her mother, Mrs. Edith Crawford, of Knoxville; and one sister, Mrs. Walter Lister, of Cedar Falls.
