Charles Stover Dies At Age Of 96

Charles Elmer Stover from Conrad died Friday afternoon at the Grundy hospital following a short illness and advanced age. He was 96 years old.

Funeral services were held at 2 o'clock Monday at the Alice church. Burial was in the cemetery adjoining the church.

Mr. Stover was born Dec. 28, 1868, in Ogle county, Ill. He was a son of Mr. and Mrs. Levi Stover. He would have been 97 on his next birthday. He moved at an early age with his parents to the Conrad vicinity, where he grew up on a farm. Aside from being a farmer, he also engaged in carpenter work. He was married to Nellie Boyer, who preceded him in death.

Survivors include three sons, O. A. Stover of Conrad, E. M. Stover of Moline, Ill., V. C. Stover of Des Moines, two daughters, Mrs. Clark Brindle of Conrad and Mrs. Homer Denny of Jeromesville, O., 20 grandchildren, 52 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild.

Charles E. Stover Funeral Services At Conrad Church

Funeral services for Charles E. Stover were held at 2 p.m. Monday at the Alice Church of God, with Rev. H. L. Heim officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.

Special music for the service was provided by Mrs. Lyle Heltibridle and Mrs. Henry Hertema, and organist was Margaret Reinheart.

Casket bearers were Wallace Brindle, King Stover, Harris Stover, Roger Stover, Lawrence Stover and Dean Stover. Honorary casket bearers were David Denney, Marvin Brindle, Charles Stover, Kenton Stover, Darrel Denney, Donald Stover, Robert Stover and Laverne Stover.

Flower attendants were Mrs. Darwin Vint, Mrs. Richard Stromberg, Mrs. Frank Patterson, Mrs. Larry Zimmerman and Rosemary Sheriff.

Charles Elmer Stover was born in Ogle County, Illinois, December 28, 1868 and passed away at Grundy Co. Memorial hospital August 27 at the age of 96 years and 8 months. He was married to Nellie Boyer at Eldora. To this union was born five children: O. A. of Conrad, E. M. of Moline, Ill.; Verlon C. of Des Moines; Mrs. Clark Brindle of Conrad; and Mrs. Homer Denney of Jeromesville, Ohio.

Preceding him in death was his wife who passed away Aug. 13, 1945, three brothers and seven sisters.

He was engaged in farming and operated a sorghum mill in Grundy county until he moved to Conrad in 1926, after which he did carpentering, blacksmith, and well drilling.

He was a member of Alice Church of God. Mr. Stover served as Chorister for many years before the church had a musical instrument. Charlie especially enjoyed working with and for young people, mending bikes, teaching rope splicing, etc.

Surviving are the five children, 20 grandchildren, 52 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
