Services Monday For Thorwald Petersen

Funeral services were held Monday afternoon at the Fredsville Lutheran church for Thorwald Petersen, 83, retired Dike blacksmith. Burial was in the church cemetery.

Mr. Petersen passed away at his home of complications of a stroke at about 11 p.m. last Thursday. He lived one day beyond his 83rd birthday.

Thorwald Petersen was born in Draaby, Denmark on Aug. 18, 1882, son of Niels and Dorothea Petersen. With two brothers and five sisters he grew up in Denmark, was confirmed in the Lutheran Church, went to school and was apprenticed in the blacksmith trade there. At 19 he came to America, established himself in business and in 1911 was married to Mary Schultz of Dike, Iowa.

He had been a blacksmith in Dike for a great many years, retiring in the early fall of 1957. Three weeks later he suffered a stroke from which he never fully recovered. During his active years he was a member of the Dike IOOF lodge, the Grant Rebekah lodge, and the Danish brotherhood Society No. 144 of Dike; the Encampment and Canton Lodge of Cedar Falls. He was also a member of the Fredsville Lutheran Church.

He is survived by his wife, Mary; two daughters, Mrs. Fred (Helen) Bentley of Edmonton, Alberta, Canada and Vera Petersen of Portland, Ore.; three grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Those preceding him in death include one son, Oakley, who was a lieutenant in the United States Air Force.
