John Dew gored By Mad Bull; Dies In The Hospital

Bull Attacks Him in Stall at the Dew Farm Last Saturday Evening; Victim Was 44 Years Old

John Dew died in the hospital at Waterloo about six o'clock Tuesday evening from injuries inflicted by a mad bull which attacked him at Mr. Dew's farm last Saturday evening.

The bull, a Holstein, was tied up in a stall. A baby beef that Mr. Dew was going to bring to town to ship to Chicago with the baby beeves shown at the fair was in the stall with the bull. There was difficulty in getting the baby beef from the stall. Mr. Dew was untying the bull to lead him out of the stall when the animal crushed him against the side of the bin, cracking a number of Mr. Dew's ribs. When the man was released and fell to the floor, the bull attacked him again and crushed him against the side of the stall. Will Barnes was at the farm with his truck to bring the baby beef to town. Jim Smith was with him. Both men saw the attack. Barnes with a pitchfork tried to drive the bull away but he was unable to do so. One of the men got hold of the loosened rope and after jumping into the manger he was able to pull the animal away from his prostrate victim.

Mr. Dew was unconscious when he was picked up and regained consciousness for only a brief period at any time after until he passed away. Aside from the broken ribs and body bruises one lung was punctured. He was taken to the hospital at once. Pneumonia developed on Monday which made his case extremely critical.

Mr. Dew was 44 years old. He was born in Grundy county and lived here all of his life. Since his marriage he resided on the farm about a mile southwest of Morrison which he bought shortly before he moved on it. He is survived by his wife and 16 year-old son, George Jr., and by his father, George Dew. There is one brother William, who lives at Hudson. There are six sisters, Margaret, Anne, Jeanette, Agnes, Martha and Elizabeth.

Funeral services will be held at the Presbyterian church in Morrison Friday afternoon. The services will be conducted by the local pastor, Rev. Whitmore.
