Former Reinbeck Woman Dies In California

Mrs. Anna Ehlers, long time resident of Reinbeck and widow of one of the leading early day business men there, died Saturday evening at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Thomas J. Hogan, in Lynwood, Calif. Mrs. Ehlers had suffered 16 years from diabetes and complications this winter caused her death. She spent most of her time the last few days in California, visiting almost every summer several months with her children here.

Mrs. Ehlers was born in Germany Oct. 15, 1853, and came to this country as a girl. After living for a time in Clinton county, Iowa, they moved to a farm in north Tama county 50 years ago. Ten years later the family moved to Reinbeck where Mr. Ehlers engaged in the lumber and grain business in the firm of Mitchell & Ehlers. Later he was in the general mercantile business as John Ehlers & Co., and still later the firm became John Ehlers & Sons when two sons were associated with him. He died in 1911.

She was the mother of five children, still living. These are Hans, Claus W., and Herman A., all of Reinbeck; John of Winneka, Wash., and Mrs. Bertha Hogan, Lynwood, Calif. There are 14 grandchildren.

The body is being brought to Reinbeck for burial and will arrive there Friday.
