Resident of Grundy County 65 Years Died at Conrad
Mrs. Levi Sherbon Passed Away Sunday Following A Short Illness
Was A Daughter Of A Grundy Pioneer
Was Born During the Civil War and Spent All of Her Life Here
Mrs. Levi Sherbon died at her home in Conrad early Sunday morning following a brief illness from heart trouble.
Mrs. Sherbon was born in Palermo township, Grundy county, during the civil war and she made her home here continually in Palermo, Melrose, and Clay townships. She was a daughter of the late Sol Wilhelm one of the earliest residents of Grundy County. She was one of a family of fourteen children, ten of whom are still living. In every history of Grundy county the Wilhelm family is recorded among the real pioneers.
Funeral services were held at the Methodist church in Conrad Tuesday afternoon and there was a very large attendance. The services were conducted by the local pastor, Rev. Hillman. Relatives who reside out of the county who attended the funeral were: Sam Wilhelm, Sac City, Elmer Wilhelm, Clarion, Mrs. Emma Lighter and daughter, Cora, from Rolfe, Mr. and Mrs. George Lighter, and Mrs. Clint Lighter from Moneta, Iowa, Mr. and Mrs. John Gallagher and daughter, Theone, and son, Royal, from Montivideo, Minnesota, Reverend and Mrs. A. B. Chamberlain and daughter from Arlington, Iowa, and Mr. and Mrs. George Feltus from Allison.
The following obituary of Mrs. Sherbon was read at the church service:
Alice Wilhelm, daughter of Solomon and Mary Ana Wilhelm, was born Aug. 23, 1864, at the Wilhelm homestead in Palermo township, Grundy county, six miles north of Conrad. She passed away at her home in Conrad, Iowa, Saturday morning March 30, 1930, being 65 years, 7 months and 4 days of age.Delia was the seventh child of a family of 14 children. Her girlhood days were spent at the home where she received early religious training, and in early life, she consecrated her life to the Lord and was baptized and received into the fellowship of the Alice church of God. Throughout her entire life she has remained true to her religious experiences and about twenty years ago upon coming to Conrad she united with the Methodist Episcopal church.
On February 19, 1885, she became the wife of Levi G. Sherbon, and immediately they began housekeeping in Melrose township. To this union was born six children, namely: Mrs. Ruth Diehl, Ward I. Sherbon, Mrs. Fern Heltibridle, M. Sherbon, Clyde W., who died in infancy, and Mrs. Mary Kinsinger, all of whom reside in Grundy county with the exception of Ben H. who resides near Nora Springs.
She leaves to mourn besides her husband, Levi G. Sherbon, and the above named children, seven brothers and three sisters, viz: Sam Wilhelm of Sac City, Iowa, John of Kenmore, N.D., Elmore of Clarion, Iowa, B. F. and Curtis of Conrad, Iowa, and Claude of Elkhart, Indiana, and Clyde of Grundy Center, Mrs. Emma Lighter, Rolfe, Iowa, Mrs. Jane Lighter, Moneta, Iowa, and Mrs. Luella Martin, Warba, Minnesota. Besides these she leaves nineteen grandchildren, over 100 nephews and nieces and a host of friends.
Beside her other religious activities she took a very active part in the W.F.M.S. of the church and only a week before she passed away she took part in the pageant given by the organization entitled "A Vision of the Past." This organization is doing her honor by attending the funeral in a body.
