Mrs. Florence Nelson
Eldora Herald: Mrs. Florence Nelson, 77 years old, died at her home here at 10 p.m. Thursday evening after being in declining health for the past year. Funeral services were held from the Methodist church Sunday, the Rev. W. H. Mitchell officiating. Burial was in Eldora cemetery.
Mrs. Nelson was one of this community's pioneers, having come to this section in about 1855 with her parents Mr. and Mrs. Morris Haskin, from Galesburg, Ill., where she was born August 18, 1852.
Her father purchased land in Grundy county, north of the present town of Whitten. Here Mrs. Nelson grew to womanhood, receiving her education in the school of the county.
She was married to George J. Nelson April 21, 1868, and continued to reside in Grundy county. To this union were born five children, four of whom survive. The children were Ezra F., who died when 14 years old; Edward, of Grundy Center; Harry C. of Eldora; Fannie B. Whitwood, of Long Beach, Calif., and Victor D., of Mason City.
The Nelson family moved to Eldora in 1898, where Mrs. Nelson has since lived. Mr. Nelson died June 16, 1914.
Mrs. Nelson was united with the Methodist Episcopal church of Whitten, where she was baptized July 31, 1887, transferring her membership to the Eldora church in February, 1898. She was also a member of the W.R.C.
Mrs. Nelson possessed a keen mind, devoting much of her time to reading. She was also a great lover of flowers, sharing those of her own garden generously with her friends.
Besides her children, Mrs. Nelson is survived by her sister-in-law, Mrs. Fannie Harmon of Albion, who has spent much time the past year with her and nine grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and many friends.
