Art Wirtjes Dies Following Stroke

Art Wirtjes died at his home in Grundy Center at 4:30 Saturday morning. He suffered a stroke of paralysis on the morning of May 15th which completely disabled him and from which he was unable to recover.

Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at the Bethany church in Grundy Center. The services were conducted by Rev. F. J. Langenberg. Burial was in the Grundy Center cemetery.

The following obituary was read by the pastor at the church service:

Art Wirtjes was born Oct. 13, 1885, in Uphusen, Germany. At the age of 2 1/2 years he came to America with the family to make their home at Freeport, Ill.

In 1888 the family moved to Stewardville, Mo., and four years later came to live on a farm near Parkersburg, Iowa.

On Jan. 10, 1906, Mr. Wirtjes was united in marriage with Trena Arends, to which union three children were born, Mabel, Alice and Marvin.

On July 3, 1929, the departed was married to Sara Muller. Mr. and Mrs. Wirtjes lived in Dike for a few years, on a farm for several years, in Grundy Center, and in Wellsburg, but came back to Grundy Center in 1949 to build a house in the north part of town. Mr. and Mrs. Wirtjes moved into their new home in June of 1949, where the departed lived until his death.

Mr. Wirtjes had been sickly for the past 5 years, but his condition did not seem serious until he was afflicted with a severe stroke early Monday morning, May 15th. His condition became worse day by day, and on Saturday morning, May 20, at 4:30, he was called out of the land of the living. He reached the age of 64 years, 7 mo., 7 days.

He leaves to mourn his departure, his wife, his two daughters, Mrs. Mabel Graham of LaPlata, Mo.; Alice, Mrs. Sam Meyer, of Hampton; one son, Marvin, Cedar Falls; 7 grandchildren; one brother, Henry, of Grafton, Iowa; and one sister, Mrs. John Meyer of Wellsburg. One brother and two sisters preceded him in death.
