Faith Engelkes, formerly of Grundy Center and Cedar Falls, passed away peacefully on Saturday, March 22, 2014, with two daughters at her bedside in Albuquerque, N.M.

Faith was born on June 28, 1920, in Charles City. She graduated from Iowa State Teachers College (now University of Northern Iowa) in Cedar Falls in May 1942. She taught for one year, before volunteering for the Navy WAVES in 1944.

Faith married Carroll E. ("Jim") Engelkes on Feb. 17, 1946. After Jim graduated from the Law School at the University of Iowa, they moved to Grundy Center in 1948 establishing his law office and in 1961 he was appointed as a judge in Iowa’s First Judicial District. In Grundy Center they were members of Bethany Presbyterian Church and numerous community organizations while raising their four children.

Faith received her master's degree in Speech and Drama from her alma mater, UNI, in 1969. In 1971, Jim and Faith moved to Cedar Falls where they remained active with community, family and friends, until they moved to Green Valley, Ariz., in 1994 and then Albuquerque, N.M., in 2010.

Faith is remembered for her passion for the theater, whether it was helping with school plays, performing, or serving on the board of the Cedar Falls Community Theatre. Her involvement with various community and women’s organizations continued throughout her life, bringing her joy and friendship.

Faith is survived by their four children, Catherine LeBlanc, Lois Engelkes, Anne Engelkes and James Engelkes; grandsons, Destin R. LeBlanc and Craig D. LeBlanc, and great-granddaughter McKenzie LeBlanc. Faith and Jim were married for 64 years before he passed away in 2010.

There will be a Memorial Service for both Faith and Jim Engelkes at Bethany Presbyterian Church in Grundy Center, on Wednesday, May 14, 2014, at 2 p.m. with a reception following. Visiting with the family before the service begins at 1 p.m.
