Warren “Shorty” Witt, 89, of Reinbeck passed away on March 22, 2014, at Parkview Manor in Reinbeck, Iowa, while under the care of Unity Point Hospice. A funeral service will be held at 10:30 A.M. on Thursday, March 27 at the Union Congregational United Church of Christ in Reinbeck. Burial will follow at Reinbeck Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 P.M. on Wednesday, March 26 at the French-Hand Funeral Home in Reinbeck; with a 6 P.M. Masonic service, conducted by the Masonic Coin Lodge No. 394. Memorials may be directed to the family.

Shorty was born on January 27, 1925, in Reinbeck, the son of Albert and Irene (Plett) Witt. He was raised in Reinbeck and graduated from Reinbeck High School in the Class of 1942. He then attended Iowa State University. Shorty was united in marriage to Julia Hilbrant on October 14, 1956, in Mt. Pleasant. They made Reinbeck their home and welcomed their children, Nancy and Chris, into their family. Shorty worked 40 years as a machinist for John Deere, retiring in 1987.

Shorty was a lifelong member of the Union Congregational United Church of Christ in Reinbeck. He was an active member in the Reinbeck Masonic Coin Lodge No. 394 and Eastern Star. Shorty also served as a board member of the United Cerebral Palsy of North East Iowa.

He was an avid reader of the newspaper. He liked to keep up on current events. Shorty was a gardener and enjoyed growing both flowers and vegetables. He enjoyed playing golf as well as watching college basketball especially UNI and Iowa State games. His true joy in life came from spending time with his family and friends.

Shorty is survived by his wife Julia, of Reinbeck; daughter, Nancy Witt of Reinbeck; son, Chris (Kay) Witt of Reinbeck; sister-in-law, Rosie Witt of Waterloo; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Horace Witt and Russell Witt; sisters, Lorraine Clarke and Inez Buhman; and nephews, Steve Buhman and Clinton Clarke.
