Mrs. Mary Meier Dies In Arkansas
Mrs. Mary Meier, who spent nearly all of her life in Grundy county, died January 8th at Twin Lakes Nursing Home, Mountain Home, Arkansas, following a heart attack. The body was brought to the Ferree funeral home in Grundy Center, where services were held Saturday afternoon. The service was conducted by Rev. Duane Heap, pastor of the First Presbyterian church. Burial was in the Grundy Center cemetery. Mrs. Meier was 79 years old.
Resided in Grundy Center Most of Her Life
Mrs. Meier was born at Steamboat Rock January 28, 1884. She was a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas W. Neessen. She resided in Steamboat Rock during her early youth. After completing her education she taught school in the Wellsburg area and in the school at Wellsburg for ten years.In 1913 Mary Neessen and George Meier were married at Wellsburg. They established a home in Grundy Center shortly after their marriage and she resided here until ten years ago when she moved to Port Washington, New York, to be near her son Vincent and family. She acquired a home of her own near that of her son, which she occupied until she left for the nursing home in Arkansas four months before her death.
Mrs. Meier became a very successful and beloved teacher. Some of her rural school pupils were present at her funeral service last Saturday. During the many years that she lived in Grundy Center she took a very active part in church, school and social activities in Grundy Center. She helped to organize the PTA in Grundy Center and was a past president. She was an active worker in the Woman's club and in the First Presbyterian church in Grundy Center, where she taught the Wimodausis class for 25 years. Her husband died in July 1944.
Mrs. Meier came from a family of four children. She had two brothers, Walter, the oldest in the family, who was a widely known merchant in Wellsburg for several years, and Arthur, who was in the mercantile business in Minnesota. Both of the brothers preceded her in death.
Surviving are one daughter, (Esther) Mrs. Thomas Lyle of Mountain Home, Arkansas, and one son, Vincent, Port Washington, New York. There are three surviving grandchildren, Vincent T. Meier, Michael W. Meier and Mary B. Meier; one sister, Mrs. Helen Schachtlie, Grundy Center.
Pallbearers at the service were W. T. Heckt, Tim Dudden, L. S. Kupka, H. K. Wilson, Lindsley Watkins and T. C. Strack. Organ music was by Mrs. Carl Palmer.
