B. VanDeest Dies Sunday At Home
Funeral services for Ben VanDeest, 87, were held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at Bethany Presbyterian Church, following a prayer service at the Engelkes Funeral Home at 1 o'clock.
Rev. A. J. Straatmeyer officiated. Burial was in the Colfax Center Presbyterian church cemetery.
Ben VanDeest was born May 10, 1876, in Ogle county, Illinois, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Adolph VanDeest.
He came to Grundy county with his parents in 1883, where they settled on a farm in Colfax township.
He was united in marriage to Harmke Saathoff on March 14, 1901. The couple continued to farm in Colfax township until 1948, when they moved to a farm a half-mile north of Grundy Center in Palermo township, where he passed away Sunday afternoon about 2:30. Death was caused by a cerebral hemorrhage.
Mr. VanDeest had been in failing health the past year.
He is survived by his wife; five sons, Adolph B., John, William, and Herbert of Grundy Center, and Benjamin B. of Holland; three daughters, Mrs. Henry Graves of Dike, Mrs. Henry J. Meester of Grundy Center, and Mrs. Edward Flater of Holland; 37 grandchildren, and 34 great-grandchildren.
Also one sister, Mrs. A. M. Meyer, Grundy Center.
He was preceded in death by his parents, an infant daughter, two sons, Albert and Raymond, three brothers, and two sisters.
