CLAASSEN, Eilt 1875-1949

Eilt Luppen Claassen, son of Luppe and Hilke Claassen, was born June 6, 1875, in Colfax twp., Grundy county, Iowa, and passed away on March 3, 1949, in the St. Thomas hospital, Marshalltown. He attained the age of 73 years, 8 months and 27 days.

Mr. Claassen was reared and lived in this community all his life. As a single man, he was a hired laborer and worked for several farmers and made his home with them. He did commendable work and was dependable wherever he was. The last years of his life he spent part of his time making his home with his relatives. He was usually blessed with good health. Last April he became ill and was taken to the hospital at Marshalltown where his appendix was removed. At the operation the physician discovered that he had a malignant growth which was incurable. But, after due time, he returned to his brother Sam's home for recuperation. On June 1st he made his home at the Maple Lodge Home in Grundy Center.

He did not entirely regain his health after his operation, but was able to make the best of the last days of his life. On Feb. 28 he became very ill and was again taken to the hospital at Marshalltown and passed away early last Thursday morning.

He made his affiliation with the Wellsburg Reformed church, to which he gave support and made his attendance.

Surviving are two brothers, Sam and Claas of Grundy Center, one sister, Mrs. Rena Freerksen, Marshalltown; one half-sister, Mrs. Dick Rewerts, Allison; one step-brother, Sam Hayes, Parkersburg; 20 nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, John Claassen; step-mother and one step-brother.
