Rites Monday for S. J. Tjaden, 69, Former Blacksmith
Souke Jurgen Tjaden passed away in his home at Greene past Thursday at 7:45 p.m., reaching the age of 69 years, 8 months, 29 days.
Mr. Tjaden was born in Lubbertsfehn, Ostfriesland, Germany on Dec. 8, 1887, son of Mr. and Mrs. Jurgen Tjaden, was educated in Germany as a technical engineer. On Aug. 10, 1910, he came to this country and worked in Milwaukee and Sheboygan, Wis.
He was married to Tena Peters Assink in 1912 and entered into the blacksmithing business in Wellsburg in 1914. This family was blessed with three children. Mrs. Tjaden passed away on October 25, 1942.
In 1948 Mr. Tjaden moved to Greene where he lived until his death.
Mr. Tjaden still loved his native land of Germany and returned several times for visits in 1913, 1925, 1950 and 1955. On June 26, 1951, he was married to Hanne Ennen in Germany. To them was born one son, Otto.
He leaves to mourn his departure, his wife Hanne and son Otto at home; two daughters, Margaret, Mrs. Harm DeBuhr of Ackley, and Mrs. Geraldine Halladay of Tucson, Ariz., and one son, Jurgen, Eldora; 8 grandchildren; 3 great-grandchildren; 2 brothers, Fred of Clarksville and John of Shell Rock; and one brother, Aljet, and 1 sister, Antje Ennen, in Germany.
Funeral services were held on Monday afternoon at 1:30 at the John Doyen home and later at the Reformed church in Wellsburg. Rev. G. C. Poppen officiated. A quartet, Mr. and Mrs. Irwin Abels and Mr. and Mrs. Eugene Ruter sang, accompanied by Marcella Neessen. Mrs. Ben Peters and Bertha Doyen were flower attendants. Casketbearers were Sander DeNeui, John Ohling, Andrew Ohling, C. W. Ross, John W. Ross and Henry Weitkamp.
Interment was made in the cemetery adjoining the Reformed church.
