Mrs. John Paterni Victim of Cancer; Last Rites Monday

Mrs. John Paterni, Sr., 83, longtime Wellsburg resident and a charter member of the Wellsburg Reformed Church, died Friday at her home here of cancer.

Mrs. Paterni had enjoyed good health almost all of her life, and was aware of her sickness with cancer only a short time before her death. She submitted to surgery at the Deaconess Hospital in Marshalltown three weeks age.

Funeral services were held at 12:30 p.m. Monday in the home and later in the Reformed Church. Rev. George C. Poppen in charge.

Pall bearers were Keith Baker, John Ohling, Claus Neessen, Delbert Ross, Odie Olthoff and Martin Boeke. Music was furnished by the men's quartet composed of Irwin Abels, Alle Murra, Gene Ruter and Marvin Stahl, accompanied by Marcella Neessen. Mrs. Baker and Mrs. Ross were flower attendants.

Burial was in the church cemetery.

Obituary
Mrs. John Paterni Sr. passed away in her home at 10:45 a.m. Friday forenoon, January 4, 1957. She had been ill for only a short time, having entered the hospital at Marshalltown on December 4, and returning home on December 21. She lived to be 82 years, 4 months, 10 days.

Mrs. John Paterni Sr. (nee Malena Wolters) was born Aug. 24, 1874 in Germany, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Wolters. On March 9, 1892 she was married to John Paterni in Shiloh township. They lived together in Grundy county near Wellsburg.

Mr. and Mrs. Paterni were blessed with 16 children. Thirteen of these children are living today.

They are Hattie at home, Henry of Wellsburg, Remmer of Des Moines, Otto of Aplington, Henrietta (Mrs. George Hoodjer) of Wellsburg, John of Grundy Center, George of Wellsburg, Jennie (Mrs. Richard Rieken) of Ackley, Richard and Herman of Parkersburg, Lenus of Wellsburg, Sam of Eldora, and Jake of Wellsburg. She also leaves to mourn 20 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Paterni made confession of her faith and was a charter member of the Wellsburg Reformed church. She was a member of the Ladies' Aid Society and was known to all as a kind, faithful and loving mother.

She was preceded in death by her husband, John Paterni, on Sept. 9, 1933, also three infant daughters, her parents, a sister, Mrs. John Tjabering, and three brothers, Henry, George and John Wolters.
