Harm Okones Dies Suddenly Friday Following Surgery

Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Tuesday in the home and later in the Wellsburg Reformed Church for Harm Okones, 86, lifelong resident of the Wellsburg area, who died suddenly Friday at the Grundy County Memorial Hospital.

Burial was in the church cemetery. Rev. George C. Poppen was in charge of the service.

Mr. Okones unexpectedly became ill Wednesday and was taken to the county hospital where he had emergency surgery that same night.

He appeared to be making a satisfactory recovery when Mr. Okones suffered a relapse and died Friday morning.

Obituary
Harm Okones was born September 17, 1872, on a farm 1 1/2 miles west of Wellsburg in Shiloh township, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Cornelius Okones. He reached the age of 86 years and one month.

He was united in marriage to Anke Nederhoff on March 7, 1901. The couple farmed three and a half miles southeast of Wellsburg until October, 1943, when they retired and moved to town.

Mr. Okones made confession of his faith at the Reformed Church on June 2, 1904, and served the church as a faithful member. He was a deacon for eight years.

Survivors include his wife and five children; Neil, Henry and Herman, all of Wellsburg; Anna, Mrs. Ben Murra of Ackley, and Matilda, Mrs. Jake Engelkes of Holland. Also 15 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother John and two sisters, Helen, Mrs. William Bleeker, and Anna, Mrs. Albert Snapp; also two great-grandchildren, Michael Louis and Tony Okones.
