Wiard J. Riekena, Lifelong Resident Buried on Monday

Wiard J. Riekena, lifelong resident of the Wellsburg area, died Friday at his home in Wellsburg.

He had suffered a heart attack on October 5 and was taken to the Grundy County Memorial Hospital, then returned home Oct. 24. Eight days later he succumbed to another attack at the age of 85 years and 10 months.

Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Monday at the home and later in the Second Christian Reformed Church, Rev. Carl Toeset officiating. Burial was in the Wellsburg Reformed Church cemetery.

Casketbearers were John E. Riekena, John T. Riekena, Every Riekena, Jake Riekena, Willard Riekena and Ted Riekena. Music was provided by Mrs. Virgil Claassen, Mrs. Wendell Lindaman and Mrs. Ivan Slifer. Mrs. Ray Toomsen was the organist. Flower attendants were Mrs. Royce Tack and Mrs. Duane Fritzel.

Obituary
Wiard J. Riekena was born December 8, 1871 on a farm located three miles west and one mile north of Wellsburg in Shiloh township.

Four years later he moved with his parents to a farm three and a half miles west of Wellsburg, where he lived until moving to town in 1916. He was employed for 13 years at the Riekena-Frerichs grain elevator here.

During his active years he was active in many civic affairs, including over 10 years service as a member of the town council. He also was a member of the Shiloh cemetery board and attended the Second Christian Ref. church.

Survivors include a sister, Annie Riekena, two sisters-in-law, and numerous nephews and nieces.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and five brothers, Dick, Fred, Ben, Triena and Evert.
