Jonas W. Shafstal Died Saturday
Jonas W. Shafstal, age 84, passed away at the home of his son, Roy Shafstal, in Grundy Center, Saturday morning at 4;15, after an illness of several weeks. Part of the time he was cared for in the home of his daughter, Mrs. Manne Bakker of Reinbeck.
Born near Forreston, Illinois, October 20, 1862, he was baptized in the Evangelical faith near Forreston. He was united in marriage to Mary Elizabeth Plum on April 23, 1885, at Adeline, Ill.
They farmed near Leaf River, Illinois, until 1888, when they came to Grundy county and farmed south of Morrison on the farm now occupied by Ray Maddux. They later moved to Morrison where he made his home, except for a short time in Waterloo, until his last illness.
Surviving are a son, Roy, of Grundy Center, and a daughter, Mrs. Manne Bakker of Reinbeck, and five grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. Preceding him in death were his wife in 1937; one son, Ora Lee, in infancy; and a daughter, Mrs. Pearl McKinney, in 1924.
Funeral services were held on Tuesday at 1:30 p.m. at the French Funeral home in Reinbeck, and at 2:00 at the Presbyterian church in Morrison, with Rev. V. V. Smith of Grundy Center in charge of the services. Burial was at the side of his wife in the Washington township cemetery.
