Death on farm near Garwin rules accidental drowning

Toledo--The death of Louie G. Janssen, 56, of Lincoln, whose body was found Monday night floating in a pond at the Lee Judge farm southwest of Garwin, has been ruled an accidental drowning.

Tama County Medical Examiner C. W. Maplethorpe set the time of death at 11 a.m. Janssen, who worked as an auctioneer, was last seen at about 10 a.m. His body was recovered from the pond about 12 hours later.

Maplethorpe said Janssen went to the pond to winterize his camper and beach his boat. The boat was found half on the beach and half in the water, and there was water in the bottom of the boat. Janssen's eyeglasses were found in the boat.

Janssen had a weak leg, the result of a bout with polio, and had a history of occasional falls.

Maplethorpe said he, Sheriff Milo Quigley and Deputy Sheriff M. L. Richardson theorized Janssen got into the boat to bail out the water, fell, and hit his head on the bottom of the shallow pond. His body was found in three feet of water.
