Rites Held For Henry Ascher

Henry Ascher, 86, of Parkersburg, passed away on Sunday, November 26, at the Allen Memorial Hospital in Waterloo.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, November 29, at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, rural Wellsburg, with Rev. Richard Dowling officiating.

Art Finke sang "One Day At a Time" and "Softly and Tenderly." Joyce Meyeraan was the organist.

Casket bearers were Kelly Harken, Randy Harken, Bob Meinders, Eric Meinders, Jack Amble and Ryan Amble.

Interment was in the church cemetery.

Henry Ascher, the son of Henry and Hattie Maas Ascher, was born October 20, 1903, northeast of Wellsburg in Grundy county. He attended rural school near his home.

On August 23, 1928, Henry was united in marriage to Elsie Lutterman in the parsonage of St. Paul Lutheran Church, rural Wellsburg. They farmed in the Wellsburg and Parkersburg vicinity until they moved to their present home in 1969.

While Henry farmed, he also was employed as a surveyor for Grundy County ASC office. After they moved to Parkersburg, Henry worked at Beaver Meadows Golf Course, Parkersburg Shoe Shop and for the city of Parkersburg.

Henry was a lifelong member of St. Paul Lutheran Church, and served on their church board for many years. He also served on the Pleasant Valley Township School Board in Grundy county.

Henry was preceded in death by his parents; his daughter LeAnn Harken; one great-granddaughter; three brothers, August, John and Harry Ascher; and four sisters, Florence Finke, Tena Riekena, Hattie Ascher and Mildred Purvis.

He is survived by his wife Elsie of Parkersburg; one son, Bud Ascher, Round Lake, IL; two daughters, Eleanor, Mrs. Harvey Peters, Parkersburg; and Linda, Mrs. James Riebeth, Littleton, CO; eight grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren; and one brother, Peter Ascher, of Aplington.

The Schwartz-Engelkes Funeral Home in Parkersburg was in charge of funeral arrangements.
