Lena Freese Services Held
Lena Freese, of Wellsburg, passed away Saturday, April 30, at Mary Greeley Medical Center in Ames following a lengthy illness, having attained the age of 75 years, 11 months and 2 days.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, May 3, at St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church in rural Wellsburg at 1:30 p.m. with Pastor Richard Dowling officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.
Pallbearers were Clifford Harms, Kent Harms, Larry Smith, Tim Stokes, Dennis Niehaus and Ralph Huisman.
A memorial fund has been established.
Lena Freese was born May 28, 1918, in Grundy County the daughter of William and Dora (Buss) Harms. She attended the Wellsburg country school. She was married to John R. Freese on December 15, 1938, at the Pleasant Valley Reformed Church parsonage at Parkersburg. They lived on various farms in Grundy and Hardin counties.
Following her husband's death in 1973, Lena worked for several years at United Eggs, south of Eldora. She moved to Wellsburg in 1977, where she resided until entering the Long Term Care Unit of Grundy County Memorial Hospital in Grundy Center on March 7, 1994.
Lena was a life-long member of St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church in rural Wellsburg.
She was preceded in death by her husband, John; her parents; and five brothers, Ibeling, Dick, Willis, Alfred and Theodore (Ted).
Survivors include three children; Joyce Nott of Steamboat Rock, JoAnn (Mrs. Jim) Kadolph of Eldora; and Jerry Freese of Eldora; one brother, Elmer Harms of Jefferson; two sisters, Mabel Janssen of Wellsburg; 4 grandchildren; 3 step-grandchildren; 1 great-grandchild; and 4 step-great-grandchildren.
The Doyen-Abels Funeral Home, Wellsburg, was in charge of the funeral arrangements.
