Bernice Koch Services Held

Bernice Koch, of Wellsburg, passed away Friday, January 6, at Allen Memorial Hospital in Waterloo of natural causes, having attained the age of 82 years, 1 month and 13 days.

Funeral services were held Monday, January 9, at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in rural Wellsburg at 1:30 p.m. with Rev. Mary Kenosian officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Pallbearers were Bill Janssen, Jr., Brian Janssen, Mark Koch, Kent Heikens, Nathan Koch, and Martin Rouse. Honorary pallbearers were Beth Rouse, Lynn Koch, Brett Janssen, Blake Janssen, Jennifer Primus, Joseph Primus, Sarah Heikens, Jessica Primus, Kent Johnson, Andrea Johnson, Kathy Riekena, Lori Koch, Angela Koch and Janelle Koch.

A memorial fund has been established.

Bernice Koch was born November 24, 1912, in rural Wellsburg the daughter of Henry C. and Bernice (Jaspers) Primus. She grew up and received her education in Wellsburg, graduating from Wellsburg High School in 1928.

On October 13, 1931, Bernice was united in marriage to William F. Koch, Jr. in Vinton. The couple made their home on a farm in Colfax Township in Grundy County where they farmed until retiring and moving into Wellsburg in 1966.

Bernice was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in rural Wellsburg, where in her younger days she was active in the women's organization.

She was preceded in death by her husband, William in 1967; 1 son, Darwin Louis Koch; 3 grandchildren, Kent and Kelly Riekena, and Matthew Koch; her parents; 2 brothers, Claus and Jake Primus; and 4 sisters, Gladys Wiltfang, Marie Ross, Esther Stoehr and Helen Fink.

Survivors include 7 children: Darrell of Wellsburg, Kayleen and husband Donald Rouse of Grundy Center, Karen and husband Harlyn Riekena of Wellsburg, Dallas and wife Glenda of Wellsburg, Linda and husband Dr. Jay Hoyt of LeMosa, California, Billie and husband William Janssen of Wellsburg, and Bernice and husband Rollin Primus of Wellsburg; 17 grandchildren; 7 great-grandchildren; 1 sister, Ruth Rohde of the Long Term Care Unit, Grundy Center; and friend Leonard Schmidt of Wellsburg and his daughter, Ivis Anders and her family of Aplington.

The Doyen-Abels Funeral Home, Wellsburg, was in charge of the funeral arrangements.
