Funeral Tuesday At Colfax Church For Local Businessman
Funeral services for Alvin L. Smit, 50, were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Colfax Center Presbyterian Church.
Mr. Smit, a former Colfax township farmer and Grundy Center businessman, died Saturday at the Americana Nursing Center, Waterloo where he had been a resident since May 15. Death was due to complications from lateral scerolosis.
The Rev. Jerry Van Curler officiated the funeral service. Burial was in the church cemetery.
Pall bearers were Daryl Harrenstein, Lawrence Aalfs, William Meyers, Alfred Meester, Ralph H. DeVries, and Harold Harms, and members of the session of the Colfax Center church were honorary pall bearers.
Special music for the service was provided by Mrs. James Willms, accompanied by Mrs. Raymond Hinders. John Paterni and Harm J. Hook were ushers, and Mrs. Daryl Harrenstein and Mrs. Alfred Meester were in charge of floral arrangements.
Alvin Smit was born January 1, 1922, in Colfax township, the son of Henry J. and Florence Maas Smit.
He was married to Minnie Irene Olthoff on September 20, 1945, at the Colfax church. She passed away July 22, 1971.
Mr. Smit was a member of the Colfax Center Presbyterian Church, and served the church in many capacities including choir director for 20 years. He had been a member of the Laymen Quartet for eight years.
Survivors include his father; two daughters, Jane, Mrs. Ronald Helm of Dike, and Patricia, Mrs. David Mundt of Tigerton, Wis.; one son, Leslie, Grundy Center; one brother, Don, of Sparks, Nevada; one sister, Marion, Mrs. Bernard A. Engelkes, of Holland; and two grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife and mother.
Engelkes-Abels Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
