Services Held For Mrs. R. Schmidt

Mrs. Renko (Henrietta) Schmidt, 91, died Thursday, Feb. 7 at the Grundy County Memorial hospital, Grundy Center, from complications of age.

Services were held at the Colfax Center Presbyterian Church Saturday afternoon at 1:30 with Rev. Jerry VanCurler officiating. Burial was in the Colfax cemetery.

Mrs. Raymond Hinders played selected organ numbers for the prelude and postlude and accompanied Mrs. Tom Simms who sang "In The Garden" and "Face to Face". Casket bearers were Jerry Schmidt, Gordon Akers, Robert Abels, George W. Schmidt, Duane VanDeest, and Harold Heeren. Mrs. Matthew Loger and Mrs. Henry Bergman were in charge of floral arrangements. John Paterni and Harm G. Hook were ushers.

The Engelkes-Abels Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

She was born May 3, 1882, the daughter of Ettje Hinnricks Mannen and Eve Harms Mannen at Godens, Germany. She came to America at the age of 25 and was married to Renko Schmidt March 12, 1913, in Grundy County, Iowa. They farmed all of their married life in the Holland area until his death January 24, 1939. She continued to live on the home place until January '72 when she went to Beverly Manor to stay. In January, 1973 she became a resident of the extended care unit of the Grundy County Memorial Hospital where she died.

Mrs. Schmidt is survived by two sons, Renko of Holland and Carl, Grundy Center, five daughters, Mrs. Henry (Anna) Werkman, Mrs. Henry (Lucy) Abels, Mrs. Herbert (Margaret) VanDeest, all of rural Grundy Center, Mrs. Christian (Esther) Freese of Dike and Irene Schmidt of Grundy Center; also one sister, Mrs. Art Heeren of Greene, 23 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, two daughters, one grandchild, three sisters and six brothers.
