Mrs. Gepka Meyer Died May 30

Mrs. Gepka Meyer, 90, of Grundy Center died at 11:45 p.m. Thursday, May 30 in the extended treatment unit of the Schoitz Memorial hospital in Waterloo. She entered the Grundy County Memorial hospital February 28, and on March 11 was transferred to the Schoitz hospital. She was moved to the extended care unit on March 28.

Memorial services were held Monday afternoon, June 3, at the Bethany Presbyterian church at 1:30. Rev. Calvin Vanderwerf officiated. Mrs. Wayne Halstead sang "O Love That Wilt Not Let Me Go" and "Does Jesus Care?". Mrs. Raymond Appel presided at the organ.

Pallbearers were Darrell Meyer, Milon Meyer, Marlyn Hook, Dennis Hook, Gary Meyer, Dean Meyer and LeRoy Huesman. Burial was in the Colfax Center cemetery. Ushers were Ed Flater and Harold Henricks. Mrs. Bill Harken and Mrs. Vernon Klosterboer were floral attendants.

She was born October 17, 1883 near Baileyville, Ill., the daughter of Adolph and Gepka Temple Van Deest. The family moved to Grundy county, Iowa. On April 10, 1907, she was married to Ausbrand Meyer. They farmed in Colfax township 10 years, then he operated the Holland elevator for six years. They moved to the family farm 5 1/2 miles southwest of Grundy Center where they remained until 1947 when they retired and built and moved into the present Meyer home in Grundy Center. Mr. Meyer preceded his wife in death August 3, 1947. She was a member of the United Presbyterian Women and the Bethany Presbyterian church.

Survivors are two sons: Marcus A. Meyer, Grundy Center; Eldon A. Meyer, Waterloo; two daughters, Mrs. Effie Hook of Holland and Mrs. Louis (Reka) Hook of Dike; also nine grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, one grandson, five brothers and two sisters. She was the last member of the Adolph VanDeest family.

A memorial fund has been established in her memory. The Engelkes-Abels Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
