Eilert Meyer, Age 96, Dies

Eilert J. Meyer of Grundy Center passed away at 3:50 a.m. Sunday, August 3, at the Long Term Care Unit of the Grundy County Memorial Hospital, Grundy Center.

Funeral services were held at the First Presbyterian Church, Grundy Center, on Tuesday, August 5, at 1:30 p.m. Rev. J. Emmett Kelewae and Rev. Glenn R. Dieken officiated.

Merle Mamminga sang "He Touched Me," and "I Walked Today Where Jesus Walked." He was accompanied by Mrs. Raymond Hinders, who also played selected numbers for the prelude and postlude.

The casket bearers were Clarence Kruse, T. J. Heronimus, Harlan Dirks, Marvin Werkman, Marlyn D. Meyer and Ben Heronimus.

Ushers were George Hauser and Floyd Rouse. Mrs. Ernest Blythe and Mrs. Paul Slinker were in charge of the floral arrangements.

The committal services were held immediately following the funeral service. Relatives and friends were invited to remain at the church following the services for a period of Christian fellowship and refreshments.

Interment was in the Colfax Center Cemetery, rural Holland.

Mr. Meyer was born December 18, 1889, near Holland in Grundy county, the son of John P. and Hilka Knock Meyer. He attained the age of 96 years, seven months and 15 days. He grew up on the family farm and attended rural school.

On December 28, 1918, he was united in marriage to Juliet O'Russa Thompson. They farmed the family farm in Colfax township that became a Century Farm in the Meyer family. In 1955, they moved and made their home in Grundy Center, but he remained actively involved in farming until recently. In January of 1986, he became a resident of the Long Term Care Unit.

He was a long-time active member of the Colfax Center Presbyterian church.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one infant daughter, one daughter, Helen Louise, two brothers and four sisters.

He is survived by his wife, Juliet, of Grundy Center; three daughters, Mrs. George (Gladys) Ebert and Mrs. Loran (Thelma) Mohr, both of Ames and Mrs. Barbara Martin of Tampa, FL; one brother, Harm J. Meyer of Aplington; one sister, Mrs. Minnie Dirks of Tama; eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

The Engelkes-Abels Funeral Home of Grundy Center was in charge of the arrangements.
