Mable Meyer Services Held

Mable Irene Meyer, 86, of Aplington, died Tuesday, May 23, at the Maple Manor Nursing Home, Aplington, where she had been a resident since January 30, 1990.

Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, May 26, in the First Presbyterian Church in Aplington with Rev. Jim Blair officiating. Interment was in Colfax Center Presbyterian Church, rural Holland.

Pallbearers were Donald Miller, Willis Kannegieter, Marvin Fertig, Hal Stahl, Les Frey and Lester Mennen.

Mabel was born the daughter of Clark and Anna Arends Sloan on June 16, 1908, in Austinville. After graduating from the Aplington High School in 1926, she attended Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls where she received her teaching degree. She taught school for 35 years in Butler and Grundy counties. She also worked at the Presbyterian Home in Ackley for nine years.

On November 6, 1964, Mabel was united in marriage to Harm J. Meyer. They lived in Aplington.

Mabel was an active member of the Presbyterian Church in Aplington since 1924. She served the church as Secretary of the Sunday School, taught Sunday School, served on the Support committee and was a Communion Hostess.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Harm J. Meyer on October 23, 1988; 1 step-son, John Meyer, 3 brothers, Byron, Shields and Eden Sloan; and 1 sister, Henrietta Sloan.

Mabel is survived by 1 step-son, Marlyn Meyer of Holland; 2 step-daughters, Viola Peters and Arvilla (Mrs. Clarence) Freese of Wellsburg; 8 step-grandchildren; 29 step-great-grandchildren; and 2 brothers, Casper Sloan of Santa Cruz, California and Barkley Sloan of Parkersburg.

Schwartz Funeral Home, Aplington, was in charge of the arrangements.
