Jennie Smit Services Held

Jennie Smit, of Grundy Center, passed away Sunday, March 7 at Allen Memorial Hospital in Waterloo having attained the age of 87 years, 4 months and 12 days.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, March 10 at the Colfax Center Presbyterian Church in rural Holland at 1:30 p.m. with Pastor Larry C. Hoop officiating.

Pallbearers were Marlyn Peters, Melvin Tjepkes, Harlin Peters, Merlin Meyer, Joe Junker and Arnold Tjepkes.

Burial followed at the church cemetery.

A memorial fund has been established.

Jennie was born October 23, 1905 in Grundy County the daughter of Henry and Johanna (Kramer) Tjepkes. She attended rural school in Lincoln Township. On September 11, 1924 she was united in marriage to George Smit at the Lincoln Center Church in rural Grundy Center. He passed away November 15, 1979. They lived on a farm west of Holland until 1969 when they retired and moved to Grundy Center.

Mrs. Smit also worked at the Grundy County Memorial Hospital and was an Avon dealer for many years.

She was preceded in death by her husband; parents; 4 brothers; and 5 sisters.

Survivors include 1 son, Virgil of Doraville, Georgia; 1 daughter, Velma Kubler of Cedar Falls; 1 brother, John Tjepkes of Ackley; 5 grandchildren, Diane, Pam, Faye, Rick, and Darren; and 7 great-grandchildren.

The Engelkes-Abels Funeral Home in Grundy Center was in charge of the funeral arrangements.
