Rites Held For Gerald Meester
Gerald Meester, 78, of Grundy Center, passed away on Sunday, June 24, at the Long Term Care Unit of the Grundy County Memorial Hospital in Grundy Center, where he had been a resident since March 11, 1985.
Funeral services were held at 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday, June 27, at the Bethany Presbyterian Church in Grundy Center. Rev. Calvin W. Vanderwerf officiated, and was assisted by Rev. Glenn R. Dieken.
Casket bearers were Doug Flater, Ronald Flater, Richard Meester, Art Meester, Kenneth Meester, and LuVerne Bakker.
Interment was in the Colfax Center Presbyterian Church Cemetery, rural Holland.
Gerald Meester, son of Joe A. and Hattie Meester, was born June 25, 1911, in Colfax Township, Grundy County. He grew up and attended rural school in Colfax Township and spent his life farming in that area, retiring in 1975.
Gerald was united in marriage to Irene Knock on May 31, 1937. Gerald spent his life on the farm which he dearly loved. He was afflicted with Parkinson's Disease for 20 years.
He became a member of the Colfax Center Presbyterian Church on April 10, 1938, and served as trustee and elder. He transferred to Bethany Presbyterian Church on December 26, 1982, and was a faithful member as long as his health permitted.
Gerald was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Henry A. and Andrew J.; two infant brothers; and one infant sister.
He is survived by his wife Irene, of Grundy Center; two sons, Norman and wife Diane, of Springfield, MO, and Delmar and wife Linda of Dearborn, MI; three grandchildren; and three brothers, William A., of Waterloo, Calvin, of Pella, and Thomas F. of Holland.
A memorial fund has been established.
The Engelkes-Abels Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
