Kate Syhlman, 89, of Grundy Center, died March 24 at Grundy Care Center. Funeral services were March 27 at Colfax Center Presbyterian Church, rural Holland. Burial followed in the church cemetery. A memorial fund has been established.

Kate was born September 13, 1914, in Colfax Township, rural Holland, the daughter of Sievert and Reka (Eckhoff) Muller. She grew up and attended rural country schools in Colfax and Palermo Townships.

On December 14, 1938, Kate was united in marriage to Hans Syhlman at the Little brown Church in Nashua. Following their marriage they farmed at Dike, Morrison and Gladbrook. Because of failing health of her husband, they retired from farming and in 1976 they moved to Grundy Center. In July 1976, Hans died. Kate continued to live in Grundy Center and lived at home until December 2002, when she became a resident of the Grundy Care Center.

Kate was a member of the Colfax Center Presbyterian Church. She loved to read. She also enjoyed collecting miniature lamps. Kate enjoyed having company, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She is survived by her son, James Syhlman and his wife Elaine of Dysart; and three granddaughters; four great-granddaughters; one sister, Frieda Mast and her husband Lloyd of Grundy Center, and one brother, Raymond Muller and his wife Donna of Grundy Center.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Hans, her parents, one grandson-in-law, James Huxsol; five sisters, Ella Kuper, Tena Raske, Violet Heerkes, Jennie Tjepkes and Anna Wilson; and five brothers, Ben, Eilert, Hans, Sievert and Melvin Muller.
