Mrs. C. O'Kones Passed Away Wednesday Evening
Mrs. C. O'Kones died at her home in Wellsburg last Wednesday. She had been in poor health for a year and a half and the end came as a result of general debility brought on by old age. Had Mrs. O'Kones lived until the 7th day of next Month she would have been eighty-five years old. Mrs. O'Kones and her husband were among the early settlers of this portion of the county. They came here in the year 1863 which is fifty years ago. They resided here for several years after that time until they removed to Nebraska. They were not satisfied with their home in that state and the family returned to Wellsburg some eighteen years ago and they have made their home here continuously since that time.
Mrs. O'Kones was born in Eastfriesland, Germany. There she grew to womanhood and she was married there in the year 1861. That was 52 years ago. Two years ago will be remembered Mr. and Mrs. O'Kones celebrated their golden wedding anniversary at their home. In 1863 Mr. and Mrs. O'Kones came to this country. They located in Stevenson county, Ill. where they resided three years after which they moved to Grundy county.
Mr. and Mrs. O'Kones were the parents of six children. Two of them are dead. One of the deceased children died at sea while the family were on their way to this country. The surviving children are Mrs. W. Bleeker from Castlewood, S. D., Mrs. Albert Snapp and John and Harm of this county.
The funeral services conducted by Rev. Theilken were held at the church at Wellsburg Saturday afternoon and there was a very large attendance. Out of the county relatives present at the funeral were Mrs. Bleeker from Castlewood, S. D., Mrs. Emma Grifhorst and Mrs. Anna Johnson from Wright county.
